چکیده

I comment on the question of how to deal appropriately with vague information by formal means. I am critical of attempts to endow vague concepts with semantics in analogy to crisp concepts that refer to a mathematical structure. I argue, to the contrary, that vagueness pertains to the variability of the models associated with a particular mode of perception; the crucial point from my perspective is that we may choose between structures of differing granularity. I see the primary challenge as finding a solution to the problem of reasoning simultaneously at different levels of granularity—a problem to which a canonical solution is unlikely to exist. The idea of modelling vague concepts by fuzzy sets is defended, and additionally, two logical calculi of possible practical value are suggested.

Comments on Vagueness: A Mathematician’s Perspective by

Thomas Vetterlein calls his reflections on the vagueness discourse " a mathematician's perspective " , but he actually does not shy away from entering a perennial philosophical debate by referring to two distinct understandings of reality, contrasting a " realism-based viewpoint " with a " perception-based viewpoint ". Mathematicians often foster a Platon-istic view of the nature of mathematica...

Reply to Christian Fermüller’s Comments on Vagueness: A Mathematician’s Perspective

Once, mathematicians discussed intensely the foundations of their field, but awareness of the underlying problems has largely disappeared. Today hardly any mathematician spends much time contemplating what mathematics actually is; we are satisfied with the belief that we examine things in great generality and with great precision. In our daily work, the question of what it means to model someth...

Fuzzy Logic and Theories of Vagueness

Fuzzy Logic has been successfully applied to all kinds of scenarios, where degrees of membership and truth can be systematically discerned. However it is highly contentious whether this fact renders Fuzzy Logic an ideal tool for modelling reasoning with vague concepts and propositions. There is a lively and prolific debate in analytic philosophy about so-called theories of vagueness. Interestin...

The Archimedean Assumption in Fuzzy Set Theory

The Archimedean axiom in fuzzy set theory is critically discussed. The axiom is brought into perspective within a measurement theoretic framework and then its validity for fuzzy set theory is questioned. The discussion sheds light into what type of vagueness fuzzy set theory models.

Translating Vagueness? A Study on Translations of Vague Quantifiers in an English-Chinese Parallel Corpus

In this paper we investigate variation in the translation of three vague quantifiers, many, some and a few between English and Chinese. Studies of ‘linguistic vagueness’ (sometimes called ‘language vagueness’ in previous research) regard vagueness as a general phenomenon in language. In this type of study, vagueness is often discussed – but not limited – to indeterminacy of the referential boun...
